You rarely know the full importance of a decision at the time that you make it. For me, looking back from where I stand today, I can see myself reluctantly nodding in assent to my pastor, agreeing to play publically for the first time before our small church. He called it “provoking one another to good works”. He soon asked me to become part-time pianist, then full-time worship leader, and later I was “provoked” into sharing some of my original songs with the congregation. Since then, Greg and Dave (my father) have been there to encourage me to take our music “to the next level”, and to produce an album. That goal has finally been realized, and I can look back in wonder at how God took one simple “yes”, and brought me this far. Say “yes” to the next opportunity that God sends your way, and see where He takes you…you won’t be disappointed!

I was given my first guitar by my parents in early high school. I pretty much taught myself the bass guitar and then 6-string guitar. Well…sort of. Me, the Beach Boys and Beatles would have lessons together everyday after school. So I started playing in cover bands for school dances and clubs and wherever we could play. After that chapter in my life, and 25+ years later... yikes!, I was asked by church friends to bring my guitar out of the closet and accompany the keyboard and vocalist in our Sunday service, David Meadows! Just like I was “reborn” in Christ, my guitar playing was reborn and I became passionate about using my musical gift for the Lord. I am a normal guy, with a wonderful wife, that gets to play music with an exceptional group of guys that strive to honor God with everything we do. I feel blessed every day to be able to do what I love.

I knew long ago that I was called to walk to the beat of a different drummer. Our God is amazing – always – and to see God truly use all things together for good…is exhilarating. Often our preparations for His service go unrecognized – as a 4th grader dragging my snare drum to the bus stop once a week for a lesson, I was clueless to what God would have in store for me. Following high school, years passed without my kit seeing the light of day – my drumming seemed to be over, but there were other pieces of life – for good – that God was working on. Sheila, my bride and encourager of over 34 years – our 9 children and their growing families – pastoring over 15 years – the family business, Art Jewelers. God at work always! To be used is a blessing and an honor, to be used in Awaken the Hero seeking to encourage and engage the body of Christ leaves me speechless.

Awaken the Hero is an Atlanta-based independent artist, driven by a purpose to encourage the local Body of Christ as God's way to reach the world. Awaken the Hero emerged from the desire to activate and encourage believers to trust our great God, to act in faith, to respond as the empowered hero of the faith that God created us to be. Our passion is to stimulate the Body of Christ into action and to awaken individuals to their calling, their privileged position and place of service, and boldness in the authority and power of our King. We proclaim the Holy Word of God as the Truth to live our lives by and Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Our music reflects hearts pure and real before God, responding to all the various areas, times, and circumstances of this life with encouragement to wake up and live in the hidden potential of who we are in Christ. Our home church is Oakwood Community Church in Acworth, Georgia.
